The Doors Interview
the Doors vocalist
Jim Morrison w/ Paramahansa Estes
We will start by saying that we met Paramahansa through a friend of a friend of a friend. In some weird way it was definitely fate. For a week or two, we had been trying to think of who to interview next. Then one day, we were talking with some friends over a cocktail or seven and still trying to decide who to annoy with an interview request. Out of the blue a friend says, "hey, I have a friend that knows someone who can talk to musicians that have passed on"...and then it clicked....ya hearin' me yet? Jim Morrison was at the top of our list.
An Interview with Jim Morrison and The Doors
Hullabaloo Magazine - October and November, 1968
The Doors' office is in a brightly painted yellow stucco building set back off Santa Monica Boulevard. Located over an antique shop, it boasts a large front window which continues to bear traces of former inhabitants: signs of Diners Club and the Bank Of America are in the process of being removed.
Just inside the office a secretary sits in solitary splendor; she is surrounded by little more than a stereo set and an electric typewriter. Bill Siddons, the Doors' youthful manager had a small office in the back. From all appearances, everybody has just moved in. On the walls are three Gold Records: one for The Doors, one for Strange Days and one for Light My Fire.
The Doors
The Doors were an American rock band which formed in Los Angeles, California, United States in 1965. The band consisted of Jim Morrison (vocals), Ray Manzarek (organ), Robby Krieger (guitar) andJohn Densmore (drums). In this configuration, the band released six albums, all of which were successful and released two US #1 hit singles - 1967’s “Light My Fire” and 1968’s “Hello, I Love You”. After Morrison’s death in 1971, the band continued on as a trio, releasing two more albums that were ignored commercially and disliked critically before disbanding in 1973.
UCLA film school students Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek had known each other at college and met by chance on Venice beach in July 1965. Morrison told Manzarek he had been writing songs and, at Manzarek’s encouragement, sang “Moonlight Drive”. Manzarek immediately suggested they form a band.
